Microstructure-Based Fatigue Modeling with Residual Stresses: Effect of Inclusion Shape on Very High Cycle Fatigue Life

When considering the effect of inclusions on fatigue life, size is well recognized. However, many these studies overlooked or decoupled from shape features. Therefore, in this study, influence characteristics with 3 equivalent sizes 26.6 ?m, 13.3 and 4.2 ?m very high cycle life high-strength steels investigated based a microstructure-sensitive modeling approach, residual stresses. A parameter, unifying aspect ratio tilting angle inclusion, introduced. Based new formulation respect to also proposed, extending former one consider inclusions. It concluded that general trend increases decrease inclusion still valid, while features terms complicate quantitative significantly. Even for constant size, combination factor could change order magnitude compared commonly assumed round shape. These findings would enhance precision estimation pre-inclusion analysis eventually provide dimensions engineering improve resistance, as will not be only design parameter life.
